This year I was introduced to a new golf towel from Goose Golf, which is unlike any towel I've seen before. I admit, I've never put much time or effort into buying a new golf towel, as I've never really noticed a significant difference from one towel to the next. After using the uniquely designed Goose Towel, I've learned that there's more to golf towels than meets the eye...

The purpose of a golf towel is pretty obvious, to assist golfers in keeping their equipment clean and dry and ready for action. The way Goose Golf differentiates themselves from all the other towels on the market is in the design. As you can see from the picture, the Goose towel is much different from your typical golf towel, with a multi-layer wet/dry design. By wetting the inner layer before your round (while the outer layer remains dry) I found this to be a significant improvement for keeping my clubs clean compared to my previous towel.

I'm able to wash my clubs in between to layers then dry it using the outer layer. This is not only a more effective and efficient way of cleaning my clubs, it also helps the towel to stay looking nice and clean with the majority of the dirt staying on the inner layers. Again, compared to my previous golf towel which now looks like an old and soiled rag, I found the Goose Towel to a step above their competitors.

Winter is in full swing for us Calgarians, which isn't always a bad thing. There's obviously not much outdoor golf happening, but there are still some golf options such as the RCGA Golf Centre or Metro Fairway, which is a new golf simulator lounge. I typically enjoy the winter season, with the excitment surounding Christmas, and following the Calgary Flames. Sadly, there won't be any 'Sea of Red' or 'Red Mile' going on this season, but the WHL and the Calgary Hitmen are proving to be a pretty good alternative.

If you're a hockey fanatic like me and have been missing the NHL, I'd highly recommend checking out a Hitmen game. About a week ago I had the pleasure of attending the annual Calgary Hitmen Teddy Bear Toss, in a game where they faced off against the Kootney Ice. For those of you unfamiliar with this event, fans are encouraged to bring teddy bears to the game and anxiously await the first goal by the Hitmen. Once the Hitmen score their first goal, the building errupts and teddy bears rain down onto the ice. It's difficult to describe unless you experience it for yourself; the sight of over 20,000 teddy bears flying through the air and onto the hockey rink, is pretty unique. That's right, over 20,000 teddy bears!
It took the volunteer crew nearly half and hour to scoop up the 21,453 stuffed animals. What do they do with over 20,000 stuffed animals? They've partnered with 50 plus agencies and charities such as the Alberta Children's Hospital to help bring smiles to the lives of young children. Hitmen players personally delivered 400 bears to kids at the Alberta Children's Hospital last Monday.

So, hang in there, get out and play some indoor golf, check out a Hitmen game, and enjoy the Christmas Season!
Rory McIlroy’s stirring victory in Dubai on Sunday capped a five-win season during which the Northern Irishman ascended to No. 1 in the world, hoisted his second major trophy and captured the money title on both sides of the Atlantic.

What will his 2013 campaign bring? For one thing, change.

McIlroy’s relationship with Titleist will not be extended beyond this season, and it has been widely reported that the 23-year-old will sign a mega-deal with Nike that could be worth upwards of $250 million over the next decade.

McIlroy has used Titleist equipment since age 14, and ditching those clubs at this juncture would seem a calculated risk. But McIlroy’s swing coach, Michael Bannon, told The Guardian on Monday that he has no fears that the change will negatively affect the world No. 1.

“He’ll have no problems at all with new equipment,” Bannon said, according to the report. “If you look at the clubs he is going to change to, all the shafts are the same. He is also going from blade to blade, which is quite an easy thing to do.

“The ball is fine, he just has to practice a wee bit more with it and get used to the feel of it. He has to play a few rounds of golf as well, which he hasn’t been able to do (with new equipment) yet.

“People overstate what the change could mean. It is something to talk about but I think this will be an easy transition for him. I don’t see it being a problem at all.”Scott Stevenshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08114684854635397727noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8256220754500350539.post-54391747744884493062012-11-20T15:10:00.002-07:002012-11-20T15:10:09.715-07:00Golf on TVSometimes it's nice to sit back, put your feet up and watch some golf on TV, and this evening would be the perfect time to consider exactly that. The 2012 PGA Tour season has concluded and not everyone is happy to see it end. With the top 125 players on the money list earning Tour cards for next year, many outside that number are faced with Q-School or burning lifetime exemptions for status next year. Some still have their cards for 2013, but it doesn't make this season any less disappointing. GolfChannel.com writers weigh in with the most surprising players to finish outside the top 125.

By RYAN LAVNER

Gary Woodland isn’t headed to Q-School finals next month for finishing 134th on the money list. His underachieving 2012 season was still plenty surprising, however.

It was natural to expect big things from the powerful Woodland, who earned a two-year exemption by virtue of his victory at the 2011 Transitions Championship. He possessed awesome power, he made birdies by the dozen, and he was the modern golfer who also looked like he was built to play fullback.

But after a breakout 2011, Woodland endured a turbulent off-season during which he dumped his agent, Blake Smith, who just so happened to be his swing coach Randy Smith’s son, so he lost him, too.

Woodland began working with Butch Harmon – necessitating a complete overhaul, because the 28-year-old wanted to be able to move the ball both ways – but their progress was derailed by a left-wrist injury that lingered for most of the year.

Give the guy a full season, a year with no health concerns, and it would surprise little if he is back inside the top 20 on the money list by next November.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

By JASON SOBEL

Call me predictable, but I’m always somewhat surprised when something happens that has never happened before. Especially when "before" amounts to 16 years.

That’s how long Jerry Kelly has finished inside the top 125 on the PGA Tour money list – and really, he’s never been close to missing. He started the streak by comfortably placing 59th in his rookie season of 1996, then followed at 103rd in ’97. Since then? The native of Wisconsin hasn’t been below 87th, easily cruising his way to further status every season.

Until now.

Kelly concluded his 2012 campaign with just one top-10 in 26 starts – and the one happened to come at the season-ending Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals Classic, where he was T-9. While those stats left him in 126th place, just $1,709 from the magic number, he was far from unhappy.

That’s because the result netted him enough cash to remain in the top 25 on the all-time money list, which comes with a one-time get-out-of-jail-free card, meaning Kelly will once again have full status on the PGA Tour in 2013.

Consider it a surprise if he finishes outside the top 125 once again next year.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

By REX HOGGARD

Of the litany of players who found themselves on the wrong side of the season-ending money crunch Chez Reavie was the biggest surprise to be headed to the final stage of Q-School later this month.

OK, Reavie has finished inside the top 125 just twice in his career and he’s four years removed from his last PGA Tour victory. But 2012 was supposed to be different. This was Reavie’s best opportunity to avoid mediocrity.

As a result of a spirited playoff run in 2011 Reavie advanced to the Tour Championship for the first time last season, elevating his status and opening doors across the schedule.

Thanks to his finish in the top 30 in FedEx Cup points in ’11 Reavie qualified to play in the Masters and the WGC-Cadillac Championship, and he played almost all of the year’s invitationals (Arnold Palmer Invitational, RBC Heritage, Crowne Plaza Invitational and AT&T National).

All told Reavie played 26 of the Tour’s best events this season and failed to post a single top-10 finish, missed almost as many cuts (11) as he made (15) and finished the season 135th on the money list.

More often than not, success on the Tour is all about opportunity and in 2012 Reavie had plenty of that, which is why he’s the biggest surprise in the Q-School field.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

By RANDALL MELL

Camilo Villegas is the biggest surprise here.

That’s because while Villegas never had the picture-perfect swing, he seemed to radiate with something more important as a rising young star. He practically glowed with confidence and determination. That’s what gave him his edge.

With a pair of large FedEx Cup titles in ’08, Villegas finished seventh on the PGA Tour money list. With his third title coming in ’10, he finished 16th on the money list. This was a player who looked like he was ascending, and yet with a fall to 77th in money last year and 144th this year, he is in rapid descent. It’s puzzling in that there have been no real injuries taking him off course. He actually finished fourth in greens in regulation this year, a drastic improvement from 163rd last year. He’s 60th in total driving this year, up from 129th last year. His putting remains problematic. He ranked 164th in strokes gained putting this year.

At 31, Villegas has been humbled by the game, but he knows he can turn his fortunes around with a good run. In the end, the struggles may make him a stronger player. Look at what Steve Stricker did after a couple of slumps. Villegas needs his edge back. He needs his confidence back.Scott Stevenshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08114684854635397727noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8256220754500350539.post-6435710240315799152012-11-07T08:18:00.002-07:002012-11-07T08:20:53.497-07:00Mankind's Greatest Achievements

‘Mankind’s Greatest Achievements’ is the First in a Three Part Video Series

Today, COBRA Golf and celebrity, John O’Hurley, released the first video in a three part series about COBRA’s famous, and iconic, Baffler. The first video features John O’Hurley discussing some of Mankind’s Greatest Achievements, ultimately presenting the COBRA Baffler, the mother of all great achievements.

“COBRA is certainly bringing something new and fresh to the industry with this campaign,” commented John O’Hurley. “They’ve been known for producing innovative products for 40 years since the very 1st Baffler and I couldn't pass up the opportunity to work with them on this breakthrough product launch."

John O’Hurley, most notably known for his role as J. Peterman on Seinfeld, is an avid golfer and lover of Mankind’s Greatest Achievements, such as the wheel, double bacon cheeseburgers and bikinis. In typical John O’Hurley fashion (and voice) you’ll be guided through some of Mankind’s Greatest Achievements. Some will make you laugh, some might make you think, some will make you want to share your own; but one of Mankind’s Greatest Achievements, in fact the mother of all of them, will make golf easier. That, friends, is the COBRA Baffler.

The Baffler was created by COBRA’s founder, Tom Crow, almost forty years ago and revolutionized the game of golf. With rails on the sole, the Baffler made it easy to get the ball into the air, no matter what the lie. In fall of 2012, COBRA introduced the new Baffler Hybrid Iron set, making golf even easier. With a progressive, oversized face profile and railed sole, the Baffler Hybrid Iron set takes direct influence from the Baffler, the mother of all of Mankind’s Greatest Achievements. The Baffler Hybrid Irons deliver golfers an easy to hit combo set that delivers maximum forgiveness, higher launch and improved distance; truly making it Golf Made EasyTM.

The video, ‘Mankind’s Greatest Achievements’ is the first in a three-part series from COBRA Golf and John O’Hurley. The next episode will be released in January and the final episode in April. Fans in the US have a chance to win a set of Baffler Hybrid Irons by visiting www.facebook.com/cobra and uploading a photo of something they consider to be one of mankind’s greatest achievements. Fans can also join the conversation on the video and the Baffler on Twitter using the hashtag #golfmadeeasy
Have you ever watched a golf match on TV? If you love golf as much as I do, you have probably spent many a Saturday and/or Sunday afternoon watching the professionals do all the same things as you do - drive the fairways, chip onto the green, putt, and even get themselves out of trouble now and then. You live each shot with each golfer, ponder and figure out each stroke as you mentally stroll up the fairways with them, and it feels so real that you even find yourself whispering. But when it's over, you always have to do the "armchair golfer's reality check." That's when you look at the number of times they each hit the ball and know in your heart that it's less times than you would.

You've also most likely spent as much time as I have wishing you were out there playing with them, making incredibly long and straight drives, pulling off impossible chip shots, and sinking unsinkable putts. More than once, you've probably said to yourself, "I wish I could play like that." You know you are capable and you have always dreamed of being a Pro golfer, but you just don't don't know how you'll ever become a good enough golfer to be a Pro.

Several years ago, I was watching the US Open with a golfing buddy who I knew was imagining himself on the tour. He's always wanted to play professional golf as long as I've known him and over the years, he'd played in a number of amateur tournaments, hoping to break into the professional ranks, but he always fell short. As we watched the match, I could tell he was becoming agitated. He criticized every imperfect shot and implored the golfers with sarcasm and even outright scorn at times. Finally, I asked him what was going on with him.

He got real quiet and he looked like he might jump up and run out of the room, but finally he said in a hushed voice, "I just don't think I'll ever make the big time." He was downright despondent and I knew how he was feeling - I had been there too - so I decided that the time had come to get him to really confront the reasons he was not playing in the US Open and help him find the golf pro inside of himself. He was looking at me expectantly and I know he was waiting for a hearty, "Oh sure you will - just keep at it - you'll make it." So he was not a little bit surprised when I said, "Well, friend, you certainly never will if you keep telling yourself that."

What does a Golf Pro look like?

I continued quickly before he had a chance to throw a Golf Digest at me: "Look at those guys and tell me what you see." He looked at me like I had sprouted golf tees out of my head but then he looked at the TV and watched for a moment as Tiger Woods strode onto the green amid wild cheering and applause. He acknowledged it all with a slight nod and a smile but he never broke stride. My friend said, "I see a Pro." I pushed him further: "What is it about him that makes you say that?" He pondered that for a moment and something seemed to click inside of him and he got serious. Here's what he saw:

- He's confident. He's good and he knows it.

- He's focused. He's aware of the crowd and the pressure of competition, but is concentrating on his game

- He's consistent . His swing looks the same every time; he stands the same way, strokes his putts the same way, and he plays with a steady rhythm.

- He's determined. If he makes a bad shot or misses a putt, he reacts but then you see him mentally shifting into a "what went wrong and how do I fix it" mode.

- He's measured. He doesn't take any shot in a hurry; he studies his lie, the course around him, the prevailing wind or lack of it, and what's between his ball and the hole.

You look like a Golf Pro too.

He turned to me and said, "Wouldn't I just love to get inside his head when he's studying a shot?" We laughed and then I told him seriously that it wasn't Tiger's head he needed to get into - it was his own head. I reminded him that he is the only one who can manage his game . I said, "You know the rules; you know how to play a course and not let a course play you. You know how to hit the ball and you are a consistent player. You have a strong, smooth swing and a steady putting hand." He was beginning to look a little embarrassed at all the praise, so I tempered it a bit. I said, "You also know the weaknesses in your game. You know what you don't do so well just as Tiger Woods knows his most common mistakes. You just have to do what Tiger does - do whatever you need to do to eliminate them."

I assured him that no golfer will ever be perfect but that is still the goal of every player of this game. There's no other way to get even close to that goal but to pay attention to those times when you miss a green or shank the ball or hook it into the trees. Stop and think, "What did I do wrong?" I looked at him with a little smile and said, "You'll know. You always know exactly what you did wrong. Your main job is to identify those things and eliminate them from your game. If you topped the ball, you probably looked up too soon; don't do that again. If you hooked it, you probably pulled your swing; don't do that again. If you missed a putt, you probably misread the green or lost sight of the ball; don't do that again. Every time you make a mistake, treat it like the first one and the last one." You see, I believe that 90% of the game of golf is mental.

Get in your own head.

I know that sounds crazy when everything about golf is physical - swinging, walking, stroking, climbing to the greens, searching the traps and ravines for your ball. Even if you ride a golf course, you are always doing something, but unless you do all of it with a positive mindset, you will not do it well. I'm sure my friend and all of my readers know this: the difference between a 1- or 2-handicapper and a scratch golfer is not the number of strokes in your game - it's the number of mistakes you made. It's the mental errors that make you misread a green or cause you to lose your concentration during a putt. It's an attitude that blames the tall grass on the fairway or the wet greens instead of discovering what you did and concentrating on making it better.

How to be a Golf Pro in a year.

By now, the match on TV was over and my friend seemed anxious to leave but I gave him one last little list of tips on how to be a Pro, assuring him that if he followed them, he could be on the tour in a year.

- Play the game within your abilities. You are good - know it and play like it.

- Manage your game - make the most of your strong points and improve your weak ones.

- Practice the shots that need work; drive a bucket of balls a day, take another bucket of balls and dump them in sand traps, in the woods, behind trees, in high rough and then figure out the best shot to get out of the mess and take it. If you don't hit it well, go get it, bring it back and do it until you get it right. Spend at least an hour a day on the practice green. Putt from everywhere but especially from the spots that seem to defy you.

- Above all, play as often as you can and play with the best golfers you can find. Find pros, plus handicappers, anyone who consistently beats you on the course.

- Play to win but watch the better golfers - how they approach their shots, their strategies and tactics. Pick their brains to find out what they're thinking about their game; pick up their positive attitude and steady rhythm. Play to win but learn from the masters.

---------

This article was written by Keith Matthews.

Do you want to do an activity that is good for your body, the environment, as well as, save your golf course money? Then walk while you play golf. Walking is not only an excellent exercise, but walking a golf course is good for the environment; preventing damage to the grass and sensitive environmental areas on your golf course.

Unfortunately, riding in golf carts has become the status quo for most American golfers. Very few golf courses allow walking, claiming better speed of play when a golf cart is used. Also, many courses do not have caddie programs.

However, that doesn’t mean you have to go along with the crowd and ride in a cart while you play. It just means that we, the health conscious golfers, need to convince golf courses to allow us to walk, by showing them benefits of walking.

First of all walking, the most basic form of low impact cardiovascular exercise is safe and effective. Walking not only helps to control weight, but it can tone muscles and increase lean body mass. Walking can increase stamina; help people manage chronic conditions, such as, high blood pressure and diabetes. If that doesn’t get your attention, walking can boost your mood and make you happier.

Walking can also prevent wear and tear of the golf course and promote a cleaner environment. Constantly driving golf carts on fairways, especially in environmentally sensitive areas, can damage the course and increase the cost of maintenance. Gas guzzling carts emit dangerous toxicants to the environment and waste precious resources. Electric golf carts still damage the fairways and are costly to maintain. Add too much rain or lack of it to a golf course and golf carts can create irreversible damage to the turf. On the other hand, walking or pulling a golf cart over the grassy areas virtually does no damage to the grass, which creates a better environment and can save golf courses millions of dollars a year in maintenance and repair.

Carrying your golf bag while you play may be too taxing for the average golfer and caddies are not always available. So the best solution is to use a pull cart and many companies have now realized that there has been a void in this area. This year, several companies introduced new pull carts designed to accommodate those golfers that would like to walk while they play.

In the past, pull carts were very rudimentary and cumbersome. Today, pull carts are as high tech as the clubs they carry. They are lighter, more aerodynamic, sturdier and more compact than the ones you may remember from the local municipal course you played as a kid.

Some pull carts are motorized with remote controls to send them off to the next hole while you putt out. Newer pull carts are easier to pack in your car and can even fit on a golf cart if you are forced to ride.

If you are looking for a way to stay healthy and promote a better environment, not to mention saving wear and tear on your golf course, consider mentioning some of these facts to your golf pro or golf course maintenance supervisor the next time you play. Maybe if enough of us get together to promote walking we can convince golf management to let us walk every once in a while.

This article was written by Karen Palacios-Jansen. For the first time in its existence, Augusta National Golf Club will have a female as part of its membership.

The home of the Masters, Augusta National is one of the PGA Tour’s most recognizable courses but for more than 75 years was also known for its exclusivity, not allowing female golfers to become members.

Billy Paine, Augusta National Chairman, announced Monday that Condoleezza Rice and Darla Moore were joining the club.

“This is a joyous occasion as we enthusiastically welcome Secretary Condoleezza Rice and Darla Moore as members of Augusta National Golf Club,” Payne said in a statement. “We are fortunate to consider many qualified candidates for membership at Augusta National. Consideration with regard to any candidate is deliberate, held in strict confidence and always takes place over an extended period of time. The process for Condoleezza and Darla was no different.

”These accomplished women share our passion for the game of golf and both are well known and respected by our membership. It will be a proud moment when we present Condoleezza and Darla their Green Jackets when the Club opens this fall.

“This is a significant and positive time in our Club’s history and, on behalf of our membership, I wanted to take this opportunity to welcome them and all of our new members into the Augusta National family.”

Rice served as Secretary of State under George W. Bush and is a noted sports fan and enthusiast. Moore is vice president of investment company Rainwater Inc. in South Carolina.

Rice said in a statement that she felt fortunate to break the sexism barrier at Augusta National.

“I am delighted and honored to be a member of Augusta National Golf Club,” Rice said. “I have visited Augusta National on several occasions and look forward to playing golf, renewing friendships and forming new ones through this very special opportunity.”Scott Stevenshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08114684854635397727noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8256220754500350539.post-29566165290464303562012-08-13T09:30:00.000-06:002012-08-21T17:10:36.832-06:00Blue Devil - Calgary's Newest Golf Course
I had the pleasure of escaping the office last week and taking a trip out to D'Arcy Ranch Golf Club in Okotoks. This was my second visit out to D'Arcy Ranch, and we couldn't have picked a better day. It was about 22 degrees with blue skies and a light wind, perfect golfing weather!

We arrived early enough to hit a few balls on the range before teeing off, which is something I always like to do. We tee'd off in the late morning, and the course was in fantastic condition. The course plays at 6424 yards from the blues tees, and offers a great variety of par 3's, 4's and par 5's. I'm a huge fan of the course design, which is challenging yet enjoyable for any skill level of golfer. The course offers a variety of challenges, including sand traps, picturesque water hazards and fairways and greens that often require tactical ball placements. Overall, this is one of my favorite courses in southern Alberta and if you have yet to play D'Arcy Ranch, I'd consider it a must play.
